CULVER CITY, Calif., Jan. 14 (UPI) — Cast members of the next “Star Trek” movie say the momentum for the project is beginning to build now that director J.J. Abrams has cleared his decks.

Abrams and the rest of the crew from the most-recent “Star Trek,” led by Chris Pine, got together this week near Los Angeles to get re-acquainted, and start the process of learning their lines and getting wardrobes together.

Principal photography recently began on the new film, which had been scheduled for release this year but was moved to 2013 due to Abrams’ commitment to last year’s “Super 8,” the Los Angeles Times said.

Bruce Greenwood, who plays Capt. Christopher Pike, told the Times the get-together at a coffee shop at the Sony lot in Culver City was filled with handshakes and back slaps and an overall eagerness to get back to work.

Greenwood said the success of the last picture both at the box office and on the sound stage was a rarity that no one wanted to miss out on. “Usually when you work on a job and you love the experience, it’s rare that the [actual] film matches the experience,” he said. “You get one or the other but this was one of the few where it was all there. Not a lot is known about the newest Star Trek film. What’s understood so far is that the actors who comprised the major characters for the reboot are returning. That includes Chris Pine as the delightfully complex Captain James T. Kirk and Zachary Quinto as the beloved Mr. Spock.

Now, the villain for the second film is also clear. It’s British actor Benedict Cumberbatch. The crafty Brit already stars on TV as the newest Sherlock Holmes, a job he does extremely well. Now he’ll take his charm, wit and cool veneer out into space as well.

“I’m hugely excited and very…flattered,” said Benedict. He has a right to feel that way given that Benicio Del Toro was also considered for the part according to rumors.

“I’m just getting my head round the fact that it’s happening,” says the newest Star Trek villain. He laughingly admits to “jumping around” after the news got announced.

The devilish actor is in high demand these days. He’s seen at the moment on the big screen in Steven Spielberg’s critically acclaimed War Horse. That’s not all, though. He’s also part of the film Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy. Finally, he’s doing the dragon voice for Peter Jackson’s upcoming The Hobbit. It appears he’ll be busy for a long time.

Benedict is an excellent actor as his Sherlock Holmes fans have already found out. It’s easy to see how he would make an appealing Star Trek villain because the expression on his face often does not signal what he’s thinking. He has a mysterious and haunting quality that is perfect for the famed science fiction franchise.

“Sherlock” actor Benedict Cumberbatch has been cast in the sequel to J.J. Abrams’ “Star Trek”, reports have confirmed, joining a cast that also features Chris Pine, Zachary Quinto, Simon Pegg, and Joel Clarke. Pine and Quinto will reprise their roles as Kirk and Spock, while Clarke’s has been unconfirmed; Cumberbatch is rumoured to star as the film’s primary antagonist.

Clarke, perhaps known best to the sci-fi crowd as the actor who played Mickey in British show “Doctor Who”, also wrote and directed cult hits Kidulthood and Adulthood, and won the Rising Star BAFTA award in 2009. Cumberbatch appeared in Spielberg’s “War Horse”, which is in cinemas from next week. He’s also set to take the roles of Smaug and the Necromancer in “The Hobbit” this December. (source)

As previously reported, Chris Pine and Zachary Quinto will reprise their roles as Captain James Kirk and Spock.

Director J.J. Abrams revealed to MTV that STAR TREK 2 will not be shot in 3-D, but will be converted in post. Abrams, however, hopes to shoot the film in IMAX.

Chris Pine and Zachary Quinto will return for the sequel, along with franchise newcomers Edgar Ramirez, Peter Weller and Alice Eve.

Alex Kurtzman, Roberto Orci and Damon Lindelof penned the script. Abrams, Kurtzman, Orci, Lindelof, Bryan Burk, and David Ellison are the producers.

DreamWorks Animation has debuted the first poster for Rise of the Guardians, an adaptation of the recently released books by William Joyce. The film will be directed by Peter Ramsey (Monsters vs. Aliens: Mutant Pumpkins from Outer Space) and co-directed by Joyce and has already been set for a November 21, 2012 release with voices provided by Chris Pine, Alec Baldwin, Hugh Jackman, Isla Fisher and Jude Law.

David Lindsay-Abaire (Rabbit Hole) penned the screenplay and I’m sure one of the film’s draws will be the fact Guillermo del Toro is serving as one of the executive producers. The story follows a group of heroes — Alec Baldwin as North (Santa Claus), Hugh Jackman as Bunnymund (Easter Bunny) and Isla Fisher as Tooth (Tooth Fairy) — each with extraordinary abilities. When an evil spirit known as Pitch (Jude Law) lays down the gauntlet to take over the world, the immortal Guardians must join forces for the first time to protect the hopes, beliefs and imagination of children all over the world.

Considering the far off release date I’m not sure if we’ll see a trailer soon, but this poster would seem to suggest a little something more may be on the horizon. [Source]

Benicio Del Toro has pulled out of negotiations to appear in ‘Star Trek 2′.

The ‘Wolfman’ actor was in talks to play the lead bad guy in the forthcoming J.J. Abrams-directed sequel – starring Chris Pine, Zachary Quinto and Zoe Saldana – but “monetary issues” have ended chances of him starring.

Although no details of who the character is have so far been leaked, NYPost.com’s Vulture blog claims he was set to play Khan Noonien-Singh in the much-hyped project.

The character – a genetically engineered super-human – originally appeared in the original ‘Star Trek’ TV series and ‘Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan’, and was played by Ricardo Montalban.

No actors have been named as possible successors to Benicio, but with the film due to begin shooting in January a replacement will have to be found shortly.

The sequel is set to be shot in 3-D by director J.J., while Alice Eve – best known for the role of the Irish nanny in ‘Sex and the City 2′ – is signed up to star.

Peter Weller is a pretty standup guy, so I think anything good that comes his way is well deserved. The last thing I saw him in was as Stan Liddy on Dexter. He was great on the show and I’ve been hoping to see him in a project equally as good.

Luckily, J.J. Abrams has picked up the actor for STAR TREK 2. There are no details on what the role will be. All we have so far is that he will definitely be in the film. We do know that Benicio Del Toro will not be playing Khan. Abrams himself has spoken out against the rumor saying, “Not true.” Apparently he was quite forward with that statement and seemed pretty firm on the matter. So for now, no Khan.

Alice Eve (SHE’S OUT OF MY LEAGUE) recently joined the cast as well in another unidentified role. Paramount is due to release the sequel on May 17, 2013. [Source]
