Not a lot is known about the newest Star Trek film. What’s understood so far is that the actors who comprised the major characters for the reboot are returning. That includes Chris Pine as the delightfully complex Captain James T. Kirk and Zachary Quinto as the beloved Mr. Spock.

Now, the villain for the second film is also clear. It’s British actor Benedict Cumberbatch. The crafty Brit already stars on TV as the newest Sherlock Holmes, a job he does extremely well. Now he’ll take his charm, wit and cool veneer out into space as well.

“I’m hugely excited and very…flattered,” said Benedict. He has a right to feel that way given that Benicio Del Toro was also considered for the part according to rumors.

“I’m just getting my head round the fact that it’s happening,” says the newest Star Trek villain. He laughingly admits to “jumping around” after the news got announced.

The devilish actor is in high demand these days. He’s seen at the moment on the big screen in Steven Spielberg’s critically acclaimed War Horse. That’s not all, though. He’s also part of the film Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy. Finally, he’s doing the dragon voice for Peter Jackson’s upcoming The Hobbit. It appears he’ll be busy for a long time.

Benedict is an excellent actor as his Sherlock Holmes fans have already found out. It’s easy to see how he would make an appealing Star Trek villain because the expression on his face often does not signal what he’s thinking. He has a mysterious and haunting quality that is perfect for the famed science fiction franchise.

What do you think?

Sam Worthington, Chris Pine and Channing Tatum will also throw down in the category at Sunday’s show.
There are some new categories this year at the 2010 MTV Movie Awards, including Biggest Badass Star — and no, it’s not unnatural that you’re intimidated by this addition to the competitive lineup. After all, when talking about an assortment of characters ranging from a betrayed super-spy to a big blue alien, it’s more than understandable to find yourself in awe.

There’s Chris Pine for starters — he portrayed “Star Trek” leading man James T. Kirk, a Star Fleet graduate who is light-years ahead of his class in terms of intellect, bravery and skill, even if his cocksure attitude frequently lowers his reputation in the eyes of his contemporaries. The real question is, how will voters react to the character’s signature arrogance?

Even if Pine can command a starship crew, is he capable of staving off the vicious warrior played by Rain in “Ninja Assassin,” the action flick produced by the Wachowski siblings? As the silent killer Raizo, the South Korean pop sensation pursued his fictional mentor with a bloodlust rarely seen in modern mainstream cinema. But are moviegoers on board with Raizo’s quest for vengeance?

He’s not the only one out to settle a score, as Angelina Jolie is also a candidate for Biggest Badass Star. No stranger to playing badasses, in the upcoming “Salt” she’s an agent betrayed by her own government and forced to clear her name.

If Jolie’s Salt is a questionable quantity in her country’s eyes, there’s no denying who the real American hero is of these nominees: none other than Channing Tatum, who played the courageous Duke in “G.I. Joe: The Rise of Cobra.” While Duke’s loyalties are unquestionable, his Boy Scout level of commitment to upholding rules could ultimately cost him in the race towards Biggest Badass.

In the end, if there’s one thing these four contenders can agree upon, it’s this: Sam Worthington has a major advantage thanks to two separate badass roles this year in “Avatar” and “Clash of the Titans.” But in the Australian actor’s defense, both human-turned-alien-warrior Jake Sully and the partially godlike Perseus truly were two of the most undisputed badasses of the year — can anyone really hold those performances against Worthington?

Don’t miss the live red-carpet coverage, exclusive movie clips and fist-pumping action on MTV News’ “Jersey Shore Blow-Out at the MTV Movie Awards,” airing live from Los Angeles this Sunday, June 6, at 8 p.m. ET/PT. Then stay tuned for the 2010 MTV Movie Awards at 9 p.m. ET/PT.

When I interviewed Chris Pine a few months back at a Greek restaurant in L.A. we were there to talk about his movie “Star Trek” but he was just as interested in discussing my brief but memorable time as a campaign-trail reporter during the the 2000 presidential race. The reason was Pine was then in deep preparation for a starring role in the stage production “Farragut North.” Now the show is underway and here’s an excerpt from the review by Los Angeles Times theater critic Charles McNulty. — Geoff Boucher

“Farragut North,” Beau Willimon’s engaging drama about the dirty tricks and brutal backstabbing of those conducting the spin war for aspiring presidents, attempts to reignite our tapped-out passion for political one-upmanship. The play, which is having its West Coast premiere at the Geffen Playhouse, may not be able to compete with the loony stranger-than-fiction cast of recent election battles or offer us any stop-the-presses scoops about our Swift Boat campaign culture, but it does capture the frenzied scheming and counter-scheming of would-be Washington kingmakers.

Better yet, the production has a rising superstar on board who could give Barack Obama a run for his charismatic money. Chris Pine, the paparazzi’s current object of affection after his breakout role as Capt. James T. Kirk in the new “Star Trek” film, stars as Stephen Bellamy, a 25-year-old press secretary for a Democratic presidential candidate who remains an invisible presence throughout. Imagine Karl Rove as a fit, chicly dressed media strategist for the other side and you have some idea of the nature of this latest boy genius.

Chris Pine knew he could pull off the role of James T.Kirk in Star Trek.

At first, he watched hours and hours of footage of William Shatner to prepare himself for the role but he soon stopped watching it because he wanted to bring his own version of Kirk to the table.

Chris revealed all to Men’s Health magazine.

He said: “No matter what your job, there are always ways to do something better than your predecessor. That’s why you were hired.”

Chris sometimes thinks back to times he’s failed at things.

He added: “You realize your failures weren’t even failures. You just weren’t as good as you thought you’d be.”

Ever since Star Trek came out in cinemas Chris and Zachary Quinto have been followed by fans and photographers everywhere they go.

You would think the pressure would be getting to them but it isn’t.

Chris explained that he keeps calm by thinking “I play a make-believe captain of a make-believe spaceship. Responsibility is only what you place on yourself.”

To the outrage of William Shatner devotees everywhere, the role of Captain Kirk in the new Star Trek went to Chris Pine—an unproven 28-year-old from L.A.—who didn’t know a Vulcan from a Venezuelan. When it comes to his breakthrough role, we don’t know whether to congratulate him or send our sympathies

You play Captain James T. Kirk. Any razzing from old friends of late?
It’s pretty fucking inescapable. I play basketball with a bunch of guys at 9:30 a.m. and it’s like, “Yo, wussup, Captain Kirk!” I don’t have a smart comeback yet.

You weren’t much of a Trekkie, we hear.
I was a Star Wars kid. The kitsch factor in the original Star Trek series is high, but the show manages to take on these huge questions about race, sex, and war. I have a great appreciation for what Mr. Shatner did with the part. There’s a gravity to it, but he’s having fun.

Surely tiptoeing around the rabid fan base—calling him “Mr. Shatner” and all that—must get old?
The amount of dissection of the minutiae of this movie…I was blown away by the protectiveness. I’m definitely guilty of looking at the blogs, and I’m not a fan of the anonymity [of the Internet], how it allows people to just spew poisonous vitriol like vomit.

You seem interested in playing a diverse range of roles. Are you worried you’ll forever be typecast because of your looks?
I did a movie called Smokin’ Aces, and the casting director didn’t want to see me for the role of a neo-Nazi hit man. But it didn’t bum me out. I had to prove I could do it.

What was the state of the Lindsay Lohan circus when you starred opposite her in Just My Luck [in 2006]?
She was making a lot of money and attracting a lot of attention from the paparazzi. It put in stark relief that I don’t want that kind of life.

Isn’t Star Trek bringing it anyway?
Maybe. But I’m not gonna hunt it out. I won’t tell my publicist I’m going to Starbucks in twenty minutes and to call the photographers. —devin friedman

Kirk in J.J. Abrams’ “Star Trek” reboot looks to be a star-making move.

And it’s not just audiences and critics who are raving about Pine’s Kirk and favorably comparing his portrayal to that of original Kirk William Shatner; Hollywood is taking notice too. Count director Kevin Smith among Pine’s growing legion of fans.

CHRIS PINE, who plays the young Captain James T. Kirk in the upcoming new Star Trek film, is proud to be part of a franchise that presents an optimistic new vision of harmony and unity.

He is hoping the new film offers as great a message to mankind as the original TV series.

Speaking to Hitfix, Pine said: “When it came out in the late 60s it was time of great social unrest and two wars and great division.

“And as trite or cheesy as it may sound, the idea that many people can work together as one and achieve great things I think is…a wonderful vision of humanity, to have the deck of the Enterprise a virtual United Nations of faces and sexes and races and people from disparate backgrounds.”

“Hopefully, after the resonance it had in the late 60s, it will have a similar effect on a world similarly torn by economic crisis and wars . It seems like we try to spend more trying to kill each other than anything else. So, to present a vision of people working together is quite a wonderful thing.”

Pine is keen to be part of the planned follow-up: “I had a lot of fun on it. We had an absolute blast making it. I think it’s a lot of fun. If they invite me back, I’d certainly be the first one to sign up.”

The actor is very much likely to be back as Kirk, especially as a sequel is already in development and he is signed for two more pictures.

The 28-year-old added that the aim with his portrayal of the character was to move away from William Shatner’s original portrayal and start with a clean slate.

Pine says: “I got a sense of what [director J.J. Abrams] wanted to do with it and that he wasn’t looking for a bad impersonation of what Mr Shatner does.

“Realising that what Mr Shatner did was so unique, was so specific and was so iconic, in many ways it was very liberating because I knew that if anything I had to run in the opposite direction to make any mark of my own on the part.

“And that’s not to say there wasn’t a conversation early on about I might be able to use little nuances from his performances to use on my own. But it was very much a reimagining and very much in the spirit of JJ’s idea of making these characters our own.”

Star Trek is released on May 8 – except in Mexico where an outbreak of swine flu has led to the closure of public buildings including cinemas.

He may play one of TV’s iconic characters in the upcoming Star Trek movie, but Chris Pine believes he can add something new to the character of Captain James T. Kirk.

“No matter what your job, there are always ways to do something better than your predecessor,” he tells the May issue of Men’s Health magazine. “That’s why you were hired.”

Not that commanding the U.S.S. Enterprise was an easy task. “When I started Trek,” he says, “I didn’t have time for anything else but climbing the thing and getting to the top. There’s tremendous responsibility. There’s tremendous pressure. But all those just clarify your vision.”

Tackling the role may have been daunting, but Pine knew he had to try. “I think the most dangerous word in the English language is should,” he says. “‘I should have done this.’ Or ‘I should do that.’ Should implies responsibility. It connotes demand. Which is just not the case. Life ebbs and flows.”

Lately, life has brought him to a happy place, complete with a sunny and optimistic girlfriend. Just one hitch: She’s a morning person and he’s not. “I’m so envious of that genetic wiring that immediately puts a smile on your face,” he says. “My genetic wiring just puts creases in my eyebrows.”

Geek buzz flying around the Internet suggests that “Star Trek” could be one of the summer’s biggest movies.

Director J.J. Abrams’ reinvention of the cult sci-fi franchise doesn’t open across the world until May 7 and 8, but early reviews after London’s Monday premiere are excellent.

The hype building around the 11th “Star Trek” film suggests that it could turn into a movie event to rival last year’s Batman movie, “The Dark Knight,” and introduce “Star Trek” to a legion of new fans.

Hot director Abrams, the creative talent behind TV series “Lost” and last year’s much-hyped homage to Japanese monster movies, “Cloverfield,” is the man given the unenviable task of re-working the franchise for the next generation — without alienating its loyal fanbase.

The 43 year old director says he went back to the beginning to look for inspiration for the latest installment. Are you excited about the new “Star Trek” movie or is it all a bunch of hype? Tell us below in the SoundOff box

“I always felt there was something that had not been done with ‘Star Trek,’” he said. “There have been 10 movies, but this is the first time that a movie has dealt with the fundamental, primary story Gene Roddenberry originally created in 1966.”

“There are so many versions and narrations of ‘Star Trek,’ it felt like bringing in another ship and a whole new group of characters wasn’t the way to go.”

Abrams’ “Star Trek” chronicles the first voyage of the U.S.S. Enterprise’s now legendary crew, telling the story of how Kirk, Spock, “Bones,” Scotty, and the rest met.

Abrams solves the problem of how to convincingly cast a prequel to a series whose characters, like William Shatner’s Capt. James T. Kirk, are indelibly etched on the collective pop-cultural consciousness with an inspired mix of newcomers and more well-known faces.

The new cast includes Australian star Eric Bana as Romulan captain Nero, and “Heroes” villain Zachary Quinto as Spock, while relative newcomer Chris Pine takes on the role of James T. Kirk.

They uniformly manage to walk the tightrope between being recognizable as their predecessors without falling into caricature.

“That was the challenge for all of us, really,” said New Zealander, Karl Urban who perfectly embodies the cantankerous Dr. Leonard “Bones” McCoy, the ship’s doctor, “not to deliver some carbon copy.”

A healthy dose of special effects adds a level of spectacle missing from previous “Star Trek” movies to Abrams’ re-imagining of the franchise — but, he says, the backbone of the film comes from the characters.

“[We had] to take something that has pre-existed us for decades, and make it feel legitimate, and vital, and relevant for today,” Abrams said.

“And the only way to do that was through the characters that these actors played so well.

“None of the vast spectacle would matter if we didn’t believe in and care about these characters.”

One member of the original U.S.S. Enterprise crew Abrams couldn’t resist including in the new lineup was legendary actor Leonard Nimoy, who comes back as an aged Spock in one of the storylines.

“He was clearly supportive and excited,” said Quinto who plays the young Spock. “I don’t think Leonard ever expected to play this character again. It had been 19 years since he donned the ears last time.”

For self-confessed sci-fi nerd Simon Pegg, who plays ship’s engineer, Scottie, working with Nimoy was a curious experience.

“When Chris [Pine] and I were doing our scenes with Leonard Nimoy, it was weird because he was talking to me as the man that I’ve known since I was nine,” he said. “And it’s not a man from this planet. It’s a man from Vulcan.”

One of the big questions surrounding the film to date has been how the franchise’s die-hard fans, known as Trekkies or Trekkers, will react to the all-new “Star Trek.”

Abrams says that despite the daunting nature of taking on such a well-loved series, he trusted that if he did his job the rest would follow.

“It’s so much bigger than anything I’ve worked on before. The scope is so crazy,” he said. “But I also felt that if we did our job and made a movie that was entertaining, it would include “Star Trek” fans.

Pine thinks the new film will appeal to die-hard Trekkers and new audiences alike.

“It’s a big movie, in that it is full of big, spectacular effects and wonderful imagery, yet a small movie because of the great character drama.

“So, whether you’re into big movies or small movies, I think you’ll find something in this film.”

Paramount, the studio behind “Star Trek,” has already given the green light to the next film in the series and has signed Abrams to produce — an indication, perhaps, of the high hopes they have for this film.
