Actor Bruce Greenwood reveals that Star Trek 2 will begin filming in January of next year – though he doesn’t know yet whether or not he is in it.

The as-yet untitled Star Trek sequel – which we will continue to refer to as Star Trek 2 for now – is on course to begin filming in January 2011, according to Bruce Greenwood (aka. the original Enterprise Captain, Christopher Pike).

Greenwood will grace the screen once again in next week’s Dinner For Schmucks, but he has yet to learn about his future in the Star Trek franchise. His character played a pivotal role in director J.J. Abrams’ series reboot but is not actually a member of the classic Star Trek crew – so his return is anything but assured at this point.

What is known about Star Trek 2 at this point is that the main Star Trek cast members – Chris Pine, Zachary Quinto, Zoe Saldana, etc. – are all set to reprise their roles; Damon Lindelof is working on the script alongside Alex Kurtzman and Robert Orci; and J.J. Abrams is still poised to direct the sequel, once he has completed work on Super 8.

Former Captain-turned-Admiral Pike could potentially become a powerful ally (or foe) of the young Captain Kirk (Pine), whose brash nature will undoubtedly lead him to continue butting heads with Starfleet authority figures in future installments. Greenwood (see below) was solid in the role and he has the support of most Star Trek fans so his return in the next film is possible.

The January start date is a good fit for the Star Trek cast and crew as well with their busy schedules. After all, Simon Pegg will probably be working on Mission: Impossible 4 this fall; Chris Pine is still prepped to play Jack Ryan in Moscow, which should begin production in the second half of 2011; and Zoe Saldana has at least another year before Avatar 2 gets underway. Scheduling production on Star Trek 2 for any time other than early 2011 may prove tricky at this point.

We should begin to find out some definite information concerning the plot of the Star Trek sequel over the upcoming months – for creativity’s sake though, let’s hope it doesn’t involve time travel this time around.

UPDATE: Trekmovie.com caught up with Star Trek producer Bryan Burk earlier this month and learned that although pre-production on the sequel could begin in January 2011, shooting on the film is scheduled for late spring/early summer of that year. That would explain Greenwood’s speculative comment.

Star Trek 2 is tentatively scheduled to arrive in theaters in the U.S. on June 29th, 2012.

There are some new categories this year at the 2010 MTV Movie Awards, including Biggest Badass Star — and no, it’s not unnatural that you’re intimidated by this addition to the competitive lineup. After all, when talking about an assortment of characters ranging from a betrayed super-spy to a big blue alien, it’s more than understandable to find yourself in awe.

There’s Chris Pine for starters — he portrayed “Star Trek” leading man James T. Kirk, a Star Fleet graduate who is light-years ahead of his class in terms of intellect, bravery and skill, even if his cocksure attitude frequently lowers his reputation in the eyes of his contemporaries. The real question is, how will voters react to the character’s signature arrogance?

Even if Pine can command a starship crew, is he capable of staving off the vicious warrior played by Rain in “Ninja Assassin,” the action flick produced by the Wachowski siblings? As the silent killer Raizo, the South Korean pop sensation pursued his fictional mentor with a bloodlust rarely seen in modern mainstream cinema. But are moviegoers on board with Raizo’s quest for vengeance?

He’s not the only one out to settle a score, as Angelina Jolie is also a candidate for Biggest Badass Star. No stranger to playing badasses, in the upcoming “Salt” she’s an agent betrayed by her own government and forced to clear her name.

If Jolie’s Salt is a questionable quantity in her country’s eyes, there’s no denying who the real American hero is of these nominees: none other than Channing Tatum, who played the courageous Duke in “G.I. Joe: The Rise of Cobra.” While Duke’s loyalties are unquestionable, his Boy Scout level of commitment to upholding rules could ultimately cost him in the race towards Biggest Badass.

In the end, if there’s one thing these four contenders can agree upon, it’s this: Sam Worthington has a major advantage thanks to two separate badass roles this year in “Avatar” and “Clash of the Titans.” But in the Australian actor’s defense, both human-turned-alien-warrior Jake Sully and the partially godlike Perseus truly were two of the most undisputed badasses of the year — can anyone really hold those performances against Worthington?

The Bounty Hunter’s Gerard Butler, The Hangover and The A-Team’s Bradley Cooper, A Single Man’s Tom Ford, Brokeback Mountain, Brothers, and Lovers and Other Drugs‘ Jake Gyllenhaal, Star Trek’s Chris Pine, Henry’s Crime and The Day the Earth Stood Still’s Keanu Reeves, The Proposal, Buried and Green Lantern’s Ryan Reynolds, and The Debt and Avatar’s Sam Worthington (above) will be presenters at the 2010 Academy Awards ceremony.

Butler, Cooper, Ford, Pine, Reynolds and Worthington will be making their debut appearance on the Oscar show. This will be Gyllenhaal’s third appearance and Reeves’ fifth.

The 2010 Academy Awards ceremony will take place on Sunday, March 7 at the Kodak Theatre at Hollywood & Highland Center. In the United States, it’ll be televised live by ABC.

Though they kept things private while dating this fall, Star Trek star Chris Pine and actress Olivia Munn have ended their romance, PEOPLE has confirmed.

The two kept their distance at the NY Times Style Magazine’s Golden Globes cocktail party on Friday at the Chateau Marmont penthouse in West Hollywood. A source later told PEOPLE they’ve split up.

Munn and Pine, both 29, appeared cozy just two weeks ago, when they were spotted at The Woods in L.A., sipping cocktails and giggling together in the dimly-lit bar.

One’s a hot young star in a budding franchise. The other, a screen legend who has became a serious Oscar threat behind the camera. So what do Chris Pine and Clint Eastwood have in common?

Both are among GQ’s Men of the Year for 2009, a selection that also includes Tom Brady and President Barack Obama. (They’ve also both gone to the final frontier on screen — Chris in this summer’s “Star Trek,” and Clint in 2000’s “Space Cowboys.”) And each was quite candid with the mag in their separate interviews.

Clint, 79, said monogamy and parenthood late in life has been good for him after a career in a female-filled Hollywood.

“I’m a loyal citizen to the family. And that wasn’t necessarily a given thing. That was acquired,” he said. “I think when you’re younger, you’re driven by a lot of hormonal effects. I just–it’s like Everest: ‘Because it’s there’… There’s a lot of people who learn a lot faster than me, that’s for sure.”

But the star hasn’t slowed down his filmmaking, with his latest directorial project, “Invictus,” arriving on December 11 and already garnering his now-customary Oscar buzz. And as he heads into his 80s, he told the mag he’ll be ready to go when the time comes.

“Yeah. I’m not one of these guys who want to check out early. But when you check out, it’s when you’re supposed to check out,” he said. “I take care of myself. I like working. That’s when I’m feeling my best.”

The same is true for Chris, who told the mag he was ready to take some time off when “Star Trek” came calling.

“I said, ‘Are you kidding?’ That’s the last thing I want to do,” he said.

But the sci-fi reboot was a success with both fans and critics – and launched the star into both the limelight and the unwanted lenses of paparazzi cameras.

“I made the mistake of talking to one of these guys outside my apartment,” Chris said of one encounter. “I said, ‘Do you have a family? What do you tell them at the end of the day? ‘Daddy had a good day, he got a shot of Lindsay Lohan’s beaver?””

And while he’s hoping for a long career, the actor – who previously starred alongside Lindsay in 2006’s “Just My Luck” before her subsequent fall from Hollywood’s good graces – said he’s at the mercy of fate.

“I’ve learned that when you make big life decisions, life says, ‘F*** you. This is what you actually have in store,’” he said. “I still assume that, any day, I’m going to be exposed as a fraud. That, like I once heard Gene Hackman say, the acting police are going to burst in and take away my card.”

Who knew Chris Pine was a diva?

In true diva fashion, the 29-year-old Star Trek stud was picked up by in a chauffeured town car (black Cadillac) and had his luggage loaded into the trunk for him, including a guitar case.

Chris then ran back inside to grab his iced coffee and a few DVDs before taking off in his car, which had a license plate that spelled out “Diva 60.”

Here’s the official plot synopsis for the film, courtesy of IMDB: “Four friends fleeing a viral pandemic soon learn they are more dangerous than any virus.”

In other developments regarding the Alex and David Pastor-directed picture, an official site has launched. Also, there have been a few cuts made to the film. Last year the MPAA gave it an R, when it was initially primed for an ‘08 release. Now it’s getting a PG-13 “for violence, disturbing content and language.”

Carriers – starring Chris Pine, Lou Taylor Pucci, Piper Perabo and Emily VanCamp – opens in theaters on September 4th.

Chris Pine will do his level best to avoid being permanently typecast as Captain Kirk, by following up his job on the Enterprise with the lead in a post-apocalyptic horror movie called Carriers. The film takes place in a future where a deadly virus has spread across the entire globe. To avoid infection people avoid each other, traveling in small isolated groups afraid of coming into contact with others. Carriers follows four young people traveling to the beaches of the Gulf of Mexico, where they hope to wait out the virus in the seclusion of sun and sand. Of course, their journey doesn’t go as planned.

What really appeals to me about this is that there seems to be at least some effort to avoid the zombie movie clichés. The trailer hints that maybe zombies might be involved, but if they are at least it’s not the usual “the dead are coming back to life” bit which we’ve seen over and over and over again. This could be good.

When I interviewed Chris Pine a few months back at a Greek restaurant in L.A. we were there to talk about his movie “Star Trek” but he was just as interested in discussing my brief but memorable time as a campaign-trail reporter during the the 2000 presidential race. “Farragut North,” Beau Willimon’s engaging drama about the dirty tricks and brutal backstabbing of those conducting the spin war for aspiring presidents, attempts to reignite our tapped-out passion for political one-upmanship. The play, which is having its West Coast premiere at the Geffen Playhouse, may not be able to compete with the loony stranger-than-fiction cast of recent election battles or offer us any stop-the-presses scoops about our Swift Boat campaign culture, but it does capture the frenzied scheming and counter-scheming of would-be Washington kingmakers.

Better yet, the production has a rising superstar on board who could give Barack Obama a run for his charismatic money. Chris Pine, the paparazzi’s current object of affection after his breakout role as Capt. James T. Kirk in the new “Star Trek” film, stars as Stephen Bellamy, a 25-year-old press secretary for a Democratic presidential candidate who remains an invisible presence throughout.
